I don’t know about what other blogs say but the 13 smart baking soda tips I’m sharing below work.

How do I know? Even SHTF dads like me do housework from time to time.

I was wondering the same when I noticed how this ‘miracle powder’ has been gaining popularity lately, and its small wonder why.

Baking soda has been known as a sort of miraculous white powder for a while because of the wide array of things you can use it for. It doesn’t matter how small or how daunting the issue is, be it at home, the garden or the kitchen – baking soda saves the day!

Wait, I may have gone too excited about that! Anyway, here’s SHTF Dad’s 13 smart baking soda tips for your home.

1. Freshens Crisper Bins

If your refrigerator’s crisping bin have an unpleasant smell, just sprinkle a little bit of baking soda on it to take care of the odor problem.

You can also place the baking soda on a paper towel, fold it like an envelope and change every 2-3 months for a crisping bin which smells fresh all the time!

And it does that like a boss! If you are into summer grilling, you’d know the worst part of grilling is dealing with your grill after all the delicious grilling adventures.

To clean the grill up, simply make a baking soda paste, apply it directly on the messy grill, wait 15-30 minutes and wipe the grease and mess away! If there’s any residue, just let the grill burn it up when you’re grilling another batch of your grilling adventures.

3. Homemade Scouring Powder

This is one of my favorite smart baking soda tips! Just mix 1 cup each of coarse salt, borax and baking soda and use it to scour whatever needs to be scoured away. Simple and effective!

4. Cleans the Microwave in a Jiffy

Well, if you hate cleaning up the kitchen, especially the microwave, you’d love smart baking soda tips to help you do that and here’s one.

Mix up 4 tablespoons of baking soda with 1 quart of warm water and use it to wipe the insides of your microwave. Not only is it safe and non-toxic, it’s the perfect cleaner for when SHTF or if you’re simply not a fan of commercial cleaners.

A smear of baking soda paste followed by a dousing of vinegar sanitizes cutting boards and chopping boards in a snap. Just rinse with water after and you’re all set!

Over-all, baking soda is a safe way to clean lots of things in the home, especially if you have babies or are expecting like we are. The tips above are good anytime, SHTF or not.

Dipping cut flowers in a mixture of water with some baking soda works the same way as commercial packaging solutions for keeping cut flowers fresher for longer.

9. Gets Rids of Ants

This is also one of my favorite smart baking soda tips. If you got an ant infestation, just find the hill, dump some baking soda on it when it’s a bit wet and follow it up with vinegar.

This trick gets rid of ants for real, so your food stores and other SHTF prepping cache would remain safe.

10. Helps Produce Sweet Tomatoes

If you are more of a homesteading type of person and not really into SHTF prepping, you will love this tip.

Sprinkle some baking soda on the soil around your tomato plant to lower its acidity. Not only will this sweeten tomatoes, it will also get rid of garden pests.
